Tube Products Moves Forward With Bending Technology
Custom
Tube Products has taken delivery of and installed a fully automated
robotic tube bending system from MiiC America/Opton Corp. Unlike
other tube benders, which require either an operator or stand-alone
loading and unloading devices, this machine handles all bending,
loading, and unloading duties and can be run largely unattended.
Parts can be loaded from and unloaded to any location within the
robot’s 15’ diameter reach envelope. Full CNC control
and 100% electric servo operation allow the machine to achieve extremely
fast movements and bending cycles. Custom Tube Products is proud
to be the first user of this new technology in the United States.
“This
bender will allow Custom Tube Products to move forward with our
increased focus on precision, low cost tube assemblies,” states
company president David Love. The system is ideal for small diameter
tube assemblies such as fuel lines, fluid lines, brake lines, and
instrumentation tubes that require 2 or more bends.
From Samples
to Finished Parts
“Customer’s
can now supply Custom Tube with hand bent samples of their parts and
have us record all the geometric data with our new non-contact tube-measuring
machine and program the bender from this data. What was often a tedious
layout process is now accomplished in as little as 5 minutes,”
says Mr. Love.
This
significant investment is the latest example of Custom Tube Product’s
commitment to best-practice manufacturing and application of automation.

New
Equipment Additions
Custom Tube
Products has installed several new pieces of equipment in 2005 to
increase production efficiency of core products as well as provide
capacity for expansion. Areas addressed were deburring of tubular
parts and ram end-forming.
"A necessary
evil of our manufacturing processes is deburring of tubes following
cutting and machining. Because deburring is not a value-added process,
we had to streamline this process and remove as much labor from
these tasks as possible” stated company president David Love.
Automation of this process was accomplished with a new 10 cubic
foot vibratory tumbler with a partitioned tub and custom compound
metering system and a fully automatic double end tube-chamfering
machine. Deburring capacity has increased 300% with no additional
labor cost.
In the fabricating
department, a new four-hit ram end-forming machine was added in
March. This machine allows for high-speed production of complex
end forms such as beads, bells, tapers, and asymmetrical shapes.
This machine will be used for existing products as well as several
new projects currently under development.
